another recommendation...
I personally endorse The Places In Between by Rory Stewart. This crazy Scottish guy walked across Afghanistan in 2002 and lived to tell about it. Quite an interesting read... it gets a gold star from me this week.

Anyone read Freakonomics?
If not you should! It is an amazing book.
It proposes, among other things, that abortion has been one of the most significant crime reducing forces in the past 30 years.
It also predicts a 1 in 4 death rate for crack dealers, making that by far the most dangerous job in the USA! (I always thought it was being a longshore fisherman)
And if you are a parent who owns both a gun and a swimming pool, the swimming pool is 200 times more likely to kill your child than the gun.
Who knew?

Valley of the Dolls
I just finished reading Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann and thought I would write about it here. I feel very sad for the women in the book. There are three main characters that are all very sweet and lively at first, but the book takes place over 20 years and somehow each of them loses their spark and the men in their lives are all scum bags and I just felt sad for them. I don't want to ruin it for anyone so I'll stop talking about it, but the book is over 400 pages and I finished it in a week so if you are looking for a good read, I would definitely recommend it.

First I need to apologize for the book choice of Roomates. I picked it and I had a hard time getting through it because it was just plain dumb.
Second I think we need some sort of structure so that we can fit this book club into all of our crazy lives. We also need a way of picking the books. Anyone have any suggestions for how we can make this run smoothly?

February is Just Around the Corner!
Does anyone have any other suggestions for February's book? If not, I vote Mariena picks the book since she's come up with so many already.
